Galena is a small town in Kent County, Maryland. It is positioned in the Eastern Shore region of Maryland and is located about 85 miles east of Baltimore and 85 miles east of Washington, District of Columbia. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were approximately 594 people living in Galena as of 2016. It is the 4th largest municipality in Kent County.
Original inhabitants of Galena, Maryland were Native American Indians. Eventually, European settlers arrived in the area. Galena was founded in 1763 under the name Down’s Cross Roads. The town was named for William Downs, a local tavern owner. Sometime before 1813, the named was changed to Georgetown Cross Roads and again in 1858 to Galena.
